The pig and the crow

Under an ancient oak, a greedy pig eats so much oak that it falls and spreads. Wakes up from sleep and digs up the roots of the tree.

– What are you doing, you fool, – asks the crow from above, – are you playing with the tree, it will dry up from the roots

– It dries up, it dries up, what good is it for me to get stronger, if I only have acorns, eat, lie down, and gain weight?

– You ungrateful animal, who has a neck like yours, cannot see with blind eyes that the tree itself gives the juicy acorn, – said the crow to the pig.

Lesson 1

1. Watch the video at the top of the page.
2. Read the story «Fulfill Your Obligations» just below it.

Fulfill Your Obligations

Samantha sometimes does not go to work because she is sleepy or she just does not feel like going. At first, her boss tries to be understanding, thinking that maybe Samantha is getting sick. Of course she is earning less money because of all the time she misses, and soon her boss loses patience. He fires Samantha and looks for someone else to do her job.

Samantha is upset, and she is also a little worried about paying her bills. But she decides that she really does not like to work very much. Still, Samantha is lucky because she has lots of friends and family members who love her. So rather than look for a new job, she starts to ask them for money.

At first most of them are willing to lend her a little bit. But, when she does not pay it back, they become upset. Why is she being so irresponsible? They all stop loaning her money.

Just like Samantha always has excuses for her friends and family, she also has excuses for her landlord. She usually does not have the money for her rent, but she always says she will have it soon. Of course, Samantha’s landlord eventually loses patience and tells her that she must leave her apartment immediately.

Samantha does not know what to do. She does not know where to begin to look for a new apartment, and anyway, she does not have any money to pay for rent. She feels desperate and realizes that she has made some very big mistakes. She begins to call her friends to see if they will let her stay at their apartments, but they are all still upset about the money she owes them. They say no.

Finally, Samantha is left feeling very desperate and worried. She dials her brother’s phone number and hopes that he is in a good mood. When he answers, she explains her situation and admits that she thinks she has made some big mistakes.

Her brother, Edwin, agrees with her. Her behavior has been very inappropriate, and he refuses to lend her any money. He tells her that she can stay with him, but only under very specific conditions. First, she must begin to look for a new job. And while she is living with Edwin, she must walk his dog every day, clean the house, and do cooking. If she does not fulfill all of these responsibilities, she must leave.

Edwin sounds very serious, and Samantha knows that her brother is not joking. She knows he is giving her an important opportunity to make a change in her life. She realizes that she must live up to her responsibilities and fulfill her obligations.

Samantha thanks her brother and agrees to his offer. She will do her best to find a good job soon. She wants to pay everyone back as soon as possible and get her life back in order. She knows it is going to be a challenge, but she also knows it will be well worth it!

Easter in Armenia

Lesson 2

In the beginning, Easter was a fixed holiday in the world of Armenia and coincided with the equinox of March 21, in the sense of separating day and night. Later, linked to the lunar calendar, it becomes portable and is celebrated on the day following the first full moon after Vahagn’s birth.

Armenians celebrate Easter with happiness and exaltation as it is probably the holiest time of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

There is no distinct date for this holiday, and it changes every year. It is consistently celebrated between March 22 to April 26. It is because the Armenian Apostolic Church celebrates Easter on the first following Sunday of the primary full moon, after the Spring equinox. The Holy celebration will be commended on 4 April, in 2021.

Easter is admired in Armenia well before its date. There are various traditions related to Easter. The first, being the course of action of planting wheat seeds. After the seeds are grown like green grass, they put the red-colored eggs on them, symbolizing new life and birth. The eggs should be painted particularly in red as they address the shed blood of Jesus.

Another tradition is to paint those eggs red with natural ingredients, like onion layers. You boil the eggs with the onion strips in a bowl, and the color from the peels naturally shade the eggs. There is a fun and engaging game that all the kids love during Easter time. As expressed by the custom, two people should “fight” the eggs together. After picking an egg, each family member should hit it to the following egg. The egg that cracks, loses.

While celebrating Easter with Armenians you will moreover see another customary dish on the table that is an unquestionable requirement. It is the Armenian trout with red wine. Even though fish and red wine go poorly together, they address the dishes that are referred to in the Bible. The wine that Jesus created from water and fish was split between people.

Strangest New Year Traditions:

Denmark

If you’re ever in Denmark and wake up to find a pile of smashed crockery outside your door, it’s probably New Year’s Eve. Unused plates are saved up all year, until the 31st of December when they are hurled at the front doors of your friends and family in a strangely vandalistic display of affection.

Spain

As the clock counts down to 12 and people around the world are preparing to watch fireworks and drunkenly kiss each other, Spaniards are staring at bunches of grapes with a steely gaze. This challenge involves stuffing your face with 12 grapes, one for every ring of the bell. Succeed and you’ve got good luck for the year ahead.

Japan

Think the countdown of 12 rings takes too long? Try 108 on for size. In Japan bells are rang 108 times in a Buddhist tradition that is believed to banish all human sins. It’s also good luck to be smiling or laughing going into the New Year, but who knows how you can be in a good mood after having to sit through that prolonged ringing.
